【US Tax】TECHNOLOGY: Gigantic fine for Facebook flags up risk for organisations transferring personal data to US

The Irish Data Protection Commission's (DPC’s) decision to fine Facebook EUR1.2 billion for allowing the transfer of personal data from Ireland to the US increases the exposure of organisations transferring data abroad to challenge by data protection regulators. The ruling against Facebook's Irish parent company, Meta Platforms Ireland, also ordered the suspension of data transfers to US electronic communications service providers. This was on the grounds that non-US persons' data is subject to unlimited and indiscriminate access by US intelligence services under the PRISM surveillance system, without any recourse to US courts against US authorities. Ireland was following an earlier decision of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), but Meta will appeal.
